Conductor Gyan Singh Maria (IG _gyansinghmaria_) was born into diverse and disparate musical cultures. His paternal grandfather, a Kolkata-born resident of Hong Kong, was a North Indian classical musician; his maternal grandfather, an Esztergom-born resident of Budapest, was a Romani violinist.

In the 2025 – 2026 season, Gyan is the Resident Artist Conductor at Portland Opera where he conducts a double bill of Stone Soup & Frida Kahlo and The Bravest Girl in the World, curates opera scenes concerts, and shadow conducts on Puccini's La bohème and Verdi's Messa da Requiem.

In the 2024 – 2025 season, he music directed Portland Opera to Go, one of the largest touring opera productions in the United States. He world premiered Shizue: An American Story at the Brunish Theatre before embarking on a fifty-performance tour across the Pacific Northwest. Also at Portland Opera, Gyan was the conducting fellow on their production of Paul Moravec’s The Shining.

Prior to his time with Portland Opera, Gyan music directed Fargo Moorhead Opera’s Gate City Bank Young Artist Program, where he conducted sold-out performances of Michael Ching’s Speed Dating Tonight! and was the associate conductor on their production of Puccini’s Turandot

​

In addition to his operatic work, Gyan is also an experienced symphonic, ballet, and oratorio conductor. While in Fargo, he served as the assistant / cover conductor of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. Gyan has also performed with the Duna Szimfonikus Zenekar, the South Liverpool Orchestra, the Trans-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, the Northern Ballet School, and the Macclesfield Oriana Choir.

Gyan is also an accomplished keyboardist and composer. He studied conducting with Marcello Cormio and Alessandro Poleggi, keyboard with Tom Primrose and Norma Verilli, and composition with Raphael Fusco and Joseph Utterback.
